The Dutch Navy’s Special Forces, Part One

Over the summer, I was privileged to get an inside look at The Netherlands’ most secretive Counter-Terrorism unit, the Dutch Royal Marines’ Unit Interventie Mariniers (UIM).This group of 130 operators are on the clock 24 hours a day and handle domestic and foreign CT and high-threat operations, including saving the crew of the German container ship Taipan off Somalia.


Dutch Skipper Tweets Pirate Patrol

The commanding officer of the Dutch frigate Tromp, on patrol for pirates in the Gulf of Aden, is Tweeting his adventures. “Responded to emergency call of merchant vessel, sent helicopter on scene but nothing found. Merchant safe and happy,” is one example of his fascinating posts.
