War is boring … and war correspondence is expensive. In our 21 major enterprises (Iraq eight times plus three trips to Afghanistan and work in Somalia, East Timor, Lebanon, the Pacific, Chad, Nicaragua and Kenya, among others), we have lost money on at least nine. A typical enterprise costs around $5,000. The average freelance news article pays $200. The math is not on our side.
In the spirit of sustaining truly independent war journalism, we accept cash donations via Paypal, or credit card donations via Amazon — the latter in $10 increments. If you value our work in some of the world’s most dangerous places, please consider giving. Donations since the summer of 2008 have totaled around $6,000.
