As an Aussie trooper who’s spent some time in e.timor I can say, yes, he is serious. A lot of the youth have a culture of Machismo, and like to appear strong and powerful. Plus we tend to be viewed as annoying neighbours that are trying to do the right thing (unbribeable cops, clearing the roads, making the elections safe) rather than as bully-boy invaders trying to take over the country.
