What’s our correspondent Jason Reich up to, a week after arriving at a U.S. Army Forward Operating Base in eastern Afghanistan? Honestly, I have no idea. I’ve gotten just one full post from him, and a couple brief emails. “Ridiculously slow Internet at this FOB,” he wrote, adding, “The good news is that I have a ton of material.” He managed to upload a few photos to Flickr, to give us a preview of future stories.

Judging from the yahoo with the tricked-out weapon, plus the random mortar fire, it looks like Jason’s having fun. Check out the full photostream.

  4. g4lly says:

French OMLTs are mentoring ANA troops in Wardak, so they work, and share FOB, with US and others ISAF force every days.

Other than mehsud, drop me a few names of whos who in the terror business there. Research is curious and chomping at the bit to dig in with Jason and Noah. Enjoyed the contractor fraud article on the highway of death. Explains a lot why unnecessary abductions were taking part in that region. Jihadists were taking advantage of that vunerabiility snatching up any foreigners for cash as history shows in article after article until the contractor was exposed. Report in Jason!

  9. [...] JALREZ VALLEY, Afghanistan — It’s a chilly summer night in the Jalrez valley, lit well by a three-quarter moon. I’m on a mission with the men of the 4/25 Artillery Battalion, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division, based in the Wardak and Logar provinces. We are weaving through ancient irrigation canals and wading across the numerous small rivers that feed the fertile valley, making our way to a medium sized village nestled into a hillside. Our winding path has been carefully chosen to minimize the chance that we will step on an IED, but it also seems to maximize the chance that everyone’s feet will be completely soaked by the end of the operation. 10. [...] I’ve come here to Wardak province, southwest of the capital, to gauge how well the coalition provides basic security and governance in the Afghan government’s own backyard. I’m embedded with the U.S. Army’s Task Force Spartan, composed primarily of soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. These troops represent the spearhead of the “Afghanistan surge,” which has moved troops into Wardak districts that haven’t seen foreign soldiers since the Soviet occupation in the 1980s. For the first two weeks of my embed, I linked up with 4th Battalion of the 25th Artillery, tasked with improving governance in Wardak. After that, I headed to the 2nd Battalion of the 87th Infantry, which handles local security. [...]
