Nigerian General Martin Luther Agwai (pictured, right), commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Darfur, has reportedly been asked to step down by his superiors. The apparent firing follows allegations of corruption regarding his wife, a U.N.-employed nurse. Dallas Blog has more:

The Texas Republic News revealed that Mrs. Agwai lived in a multi-million-dollar town-home in Manhattan, “never legally obtained a registered nursing license in her country of origin,” received financial payments from ECOSOC, an agency which distributes financial and material aid to Third World nations, and billed an excessive expense account to the U.N. to pay for first class travel accommodations when she attended a “World AIDS Day” conference in Lagos, Nigeria on November 27, 2007.

Agwai has been widely hailed as an effective commander for a very difficult mission, leading an under-resourced peacekeeping team in a very hostile country. His departure raises hard questions. Does possible corruption (emphasis on “possible”), on the home-front, diminish Agwai’s value as a commander? Consider how corrupt recently-deceased Gabonese president Omar Bongo was — and the many decades of peace and relative prosperity he brought to his country.

Corruption is as African as sunshine. How do you balance the need for a less corrupt future society, with the pressing demands of today’s missions, which beg for today’s corrupt leaders?
