The blog China Military Report is a treasure trove of bizzaro weapons ideas, like something straight out of the nuclear-hand-grenade 1950s. The Navy Times‘ new blog The Scoop Deck highlighted CMR’s hilarious, giant, submarine aircraft carrier. But the Chinese blog also features a proposed design for a huge, flying airstrip (illustrated) that is basically a carbon copy of the “heli-carrier” belonging to Marvel Comics’ SHIELD intel agency.

CMR’s name for this fantasy carrier? “China’s space mothership.” Priceless.

Looks like a ripoff of the Thunderbirds (1960 series).

DARPA will be jealous :)

Sky Captain riffed off of the SHIELD Heli-Carrier idea…which first saw print in 1964, if memory serves correctly.

Finding it difficult to believe that any nation’s government would seriously take this concept and run with it…though I can see where engineers would love to try to make it real.
