For years, Chad, Sudan and Central African Republic have accused each other of supporting each other’s rebel groups, each government allegedly trying to destabilize the others. Chad experienced its annual rebel flare-up in recent weeks, right before the rainy season shut down the roads, and in retaliation launched air raids on targets inside Sudan.

Now Sudan has accused Chad of sending government troops, pictured, to support rebels in Darfur fighting to destabilize the Sudanese government. “Chadian aggression has reached the locality of Kornoi, a town near the Chadian border,” said Osman Kebir, Khartoum’s man in north Darfur. If true, it marks a major escalation of what was once mostly a proxy conflict.

It also renders the region too volatile for meaningful intervention by the U.N., E.U. or other entities.
