In the wake of a recent rebel uprising in eastern Chad, up to three Chadian aircraft have allegedly attacked targets inside Sudan. Khartoum called the attacks an “act of war.”
The aircraft are most likely Swiss PC-9s, fitted with weapons in violation of Swiss law, or Su-25 attack jets bought from, and flow by, Ukrainians. Chad’s air force is small but heavily armed and very active over the border region. Last year, rebels shot down a Chadian Mi-35 attack chopper flown by Ukrainian mercenaries.
Lawless, rogue Sudan is a favorite bombing target. In addition to Chad, Israel recently launched an air raid on targets inside the country. The Israeli attack hit an arms convoy bound for Gaza.
There has been talk of setting up a no-fly zone over Darfur, in western Sudan, in a bid to stop Sudanese air attacks on civilians. The Swedes recently trained for just such an operation. Any no-fly zone for Darfur would have to be based in Chad. But no one has addressed the Chadian wild card. Would a U.N. fighter force also halt Chadian air attacks on Sudan?
That would be weird. Two airplanes take off from the same Chadian air base: one of them on a mission to bomb Sudan, the other tasked with preventing the same raid. Would the pilots drink in the same bar afterward, perhaps laugh about the Looney Tunes charade that is Central African warfare?
Get a taste of Sudanese military “power” in the video above.
