Late last year, mercenary firm Xe — a.k.a., Blackwater, the company that got kicked out of Iraq for allegedly killing innocent civilians — launched a research ship converted as a makeshift pirate-fighting vessel. The goal, to grab a share of the burgeoning counter-pirate business.
More than six months later, the 183-foot McArthur still hasn’t won any contracts, and spends much of her time pier-side in Virginia, while her crew abuse each other. “Legal papers allege that it’s the McArthur‘s own crewmen that need protection — from their superior officers,” The Virginia Pilot reports.
The newspaper, citing legal documents, lists several incidents:
* A former crew member says he was handcuffed in retaliation for talking to a reporter
* A black crew member says he faced racial harassment
* Another former crewman, Christopher Stamper, says he was fired for reporting harassment to the captain
“Honestly, I was afraid in the beginning to say anything that would discredit them,” Stamper told The Pilot. “They basically think they can get away with whatever the hell they want to do.”
I’d take my chances with the pirates.
