Four months after Somali parliamentarians elected a new, moderate Islamic president, fighting has resumed in Mogadishu, pitting hardline Islamists against the president’s forces, with African Union peacekeepers caught in the middle, firing mortars at random. Mohamed Omar Hussein reports from Mogadishu:
Heavy fighting between Somalia government troops and anarchist[s] kick off [at] dusk on Monday in the Somalia capital Mogadishu. Mortars believed to be fired by the Ugandan peacekeeping troops stationed at Villa Somalia are landing at some districts in Mogadishu such as Yaqshid and Wardhigley. So far 13 people in these two districts were reported [to] have deceased in the shelling of the mortars and 20 others wounded.
