According to the A.P., Osama bin Laden has published an 11-minute audio recording encouraging Somali Islamists to resist the new president, Shariff Sheikh Ahmed, who is himself a moderate Islamist. Since his election last month, Ahmed has made huge progress in getting Somalia’s warring parties to sit down and talk. Bin Laden’s exhortation is a sign of desperation. Somalia is on the brink of peace, and that worries men like bin Laden, whose metier is death and destruction.

LOOKS LIKE HE BLEW HIS TOP OFF HERE.
In the audiotape, bin Laden lashed out at Ahmed as a turncoat and tool of the United States, saying his election was “induced by the American envoy in Kenya,” a reference to the U.S. ambassador in Nairobi.
A spokeswoman for U.S. Ambassador Michael Ranneberger had no immediate comment on the audiotape, which was the third from bin Laden this year. The last one was released on March 14

[...] I’m going to quote this whole post from Robert Farley: Osama Bin Laden has released an audio tape denouncing Somali President Shariff Sheikh Ahmed, and calling for Somalis to resist the new government’s rule. Shariff Sheikh Ahmed is formerly the head of the Islamic Courts Union, which Ethiopia overthrew in 2006 with American assistance. The United States was concerned that the ICU was closely associated with Al Qaeda, and that it might harbor terrorists. Bin Laden’s tape is either an elaborate ruse to make the Bush administration look incomparably stupid, or further evidence that the Bush administration was incomparably stupid. [...]
The reaction of Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys to Osama’s mesage is very interessting:

Dave – thanks for coverage on Somalia. However, I think the progress wrt to reconciliation you mention is rather unimpressive. Fighting in all parts of Somalia is up, from what I have seen. Btw: has NATO finally paid you? Remember still your presentation in Portsmouth, Va.
[...] Last week Osama bin Laden exhorted Somalis to rise up in jihad against new president Shariff Sheikh Ahmed, a call that even Somali insurgent leaders rejected. [...]
