Author’s note: The aid group Invisible Children, whose work is featured in this 2011 post, has launched a very effective viral video and Twitter campaign (#Kony2012) aimed at mustering support for the international military campaign to hunt and capture or kill Joseph Kony, the leader of the murderous Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group hiding out in Congo and Central African Republic. I will discuss the wisdom of Invisible Children’s campaign in coming days.

Don’t continue reading this post if you have weak stomach. Seriously, just stop. If you can stand it, below the jump are photos of recent victims of Lord’s Resistance Army attacks in northeastern Congo. As you can see, the LRA likes to mark its victims in distinctive ways. The photos come courtesy of a Catholic priest who survived LRA abduction in 2008. More on that, later.

Hell of a sight, poor sods. My sympathies.

It always amazes me: human cruelty and perversion don’t seem to know any limits.

  3. That is such a sad thing. I instantly thought about inglorious bastards though. But no true human being could do something like that to another person.

Does anyone else notice that this is the same area that King Leopold 11 of Belgium mass mutilated, raped or killed Congolese for ivory and rubber and other resources in the 1800′s – 1900′s? It caused protests all over the world and eventually Leopold 11 was deposed and disliked by his people. Eerie the similarities. The solders of King Leopold cut off hands, legs, and other body parts if the people they had kidnapped didn’t work hard enongh for them. In an odd way, could the LRA be the legacy of Leopold? It is heinous.

In the words of Joseph Conrad “The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness”.
I wonder why Obama has taken such an interest in Congo all of a sudden. Hmmm, maybe it’s the oil find in neighboruing Uganda.

  10. Varun says:

Anyways, I guess its the action being taken that matters. The earlier this ends the better. Oil is probably the last thing that’d matter to people here. :(
