Good: Moqtada Al Sadr extends Shia militia ceasfire. This means another six months of relative peace in Iraq.
Bad: Canada to quit Afghanistan in 2011. On the other hand, a firm exit date allows for long-range planning.
Correction: The Ares blog reports that the U.S. has deployed just 1 percent of its military to Afghanistan, as compared to 4 percent for Britain and 3 for The Netherlands. But Ares’ figures include only the NATO mission. The U.S. has 20,000 soldiers in the country who aren’t under NATO. The real percentage is closer to 2. Plus the U.S. provides the majority of the airlift, fast-jet attack force and surveillance capability.
