Dutch Lose Another Soldier

“The Netherlands’ military said a Dutch soldier had been killed overnight by a bomb in southern Afghanistan,” the A.P. is reporting. “It said the 30-year-old sergeant was in a unit searching for explosives in the province of Uruzgan when an improvised device exploded, Chief of Staff Dick Berlijn told a televised news conference. A 23-year-old corporal was wounded, Berlijn said.”

This is bad news for a country with a very low tolerance for casualties … and for the Afghanistan coalition, since every additional death makes it more likely that the Dutch will pull out next year, leaving Uruzgan province to the Taliban.

The West doesn’t get it when it comes to war. The Taliban does, the Iraqi insurgents do, Putin’s figured it out and China understands.
